A well-known example of the use of analogue signals is recording and playback of vinyl records.

Music and speech cause a microphone diaphragm to vibrate, and are written as analogue signals on vinyl records. In this process, the analogue signal is changed continuously by the vibrations in the air, thus capable of assuming all intermediate values between 0 V and the audio signal's maximum voltage. The analogue signal can be displayed graphically in the form of a continuously changing voltage as a function of time.

Sensors in digital and control technology function similarly. They register physical quantities and output them as analogue signals which, however, are then usually converted into digital form.
