Torsional dampers are designed to dampen torsional vibrations coming from the engine. They also help the clutch operate smoothly when the vehicle starts out from standstill. At the same time, this will prevent and/or reduce gearbox noise (e.g. "gearbox rattling") and gear wheel wear.

Torsional dampers comprise the damper springs and the friction assembly.

The damper springs support the hub via the hub flange at the driving plate. The hub and driving plate are joined by a bearing that permits them to rotate relative to one another. Under load, the hub can rotate relative to the driving plate (and the disc part with the lining) within a certain limit. To keep the hub flange from striking the stop pins, the torque transmitted by the damper springs must be greater than the maximum engine torque.

The friction assembly is located in the hub section and comprises the friction rings and the disc springs. The friction assembly uses its friction to dampen the torsional vibrations. The torsional vibrations are created by the turning of the hub relative to the driving plate. An axial compression force is required for the friction of the friction assembly. That compression force is generated with the aid of the disc springs.
